The teaching and learning resources listed below have been selected for staff and student use.

 

Quick reference materials that good researchers have always used as a starting point for information searches. Almanacs, atlases, encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and quotations sources.

 

Research Starting Points

 
  • Academic Reference and Research Index Created and maintained by Dr. Michael Bell, former chair, Texas Association of School Librarians. The Academic Index is a meta-search tool that includes results from mega-information databases that index only research-quality reference and information sources selected by professional librarians, educators, and educational and library consortia.

  

 

  • Internet Public Library The Internet Public Library (IPL) is a public service organization and learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information. The focus is to provide library services to Internet users. Activities include: finding, evaluating, selecting, organizing, describing, and creating information resources; and direct assistance to individuals.

 

  • Librarians' Internet Index Librarians' Internet Index (LII) is a publicly-funded website and weekly newsletter from California, USA - serving the world.

 

  • RefDesk Since 1995, Refdesk is a free and family-friendly web site that indexes and reviews quality, credible, and current web-based resources.

 

 

Fast Facts

 

  • Answers Since 2005, it has become one of the leading information sites on the Internet. Answers.com's collection of over 4 million answers is drawn from over 60 titles from brand-name publishers, as well as original content.

  • DeskRef: Best Online References

    Fast Facts Almanacs, Factbooks, Statistical Reports & Related Reference Tools.

  • Fugitive Fact File Maintained by the Hennepin County Library staff in Minnesota. Elusive information files for obscure references, but this is one of the few you can find online. Use the Fugitive Fact File to retrieve hard-to-find and miscellaneous information. Links to related websites are included.

  • Symbols.com - Search for symbols related to ideas, or discover the meaning of a symbol by describing its characteristics. Symbols.com contains more than 1,600 articles about 2,500 Western signs, arranged into 54 groups according to their graphic characteristics.
