Subject or Internet Directories

What are they?

  • Created by respected scholars who select & classify sites.
  • Organized into categories & sub-categories.
  • More reliable.

Use SUBJECT DIRECTORIES when:

  • Looking for a list of sites on your topic recommended by experts
  • Researching a broad topic or idea
  • Retrieving a list of sites relevant to your topic rather than a long list of individual pages
  • Looking for broader topics, such as: Civil Rights, Space Exploration, or Environmental Degradation.

  • About: Excellent source for web guides on popular topics.
  • Academic Info: An online subject directory of over 25,000 hand-picked educational resources for high school and college students.
  • BUBL: from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland - Selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas.
  • Canadian Information by Subject : from the National Library of Canada
  • Digital Librarian
  • Infomine: "A virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level."
  • Intute: Intute is a free online service providing access to the very best Web resources for education and research. The service is created by a network of UK universities and partners. Subject specialists select and evaluate the websites in the database and write high quality descriptions of the resources. The database contains 114539 records.
  • Librarians' Index to the Internet: "A searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 8500 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries" (from the "About" page). Easy to use, very browsable."
  • PINAKES: A subject launchpad from Herriot-Watt University in Scotland. "Callimachus of Cyrenae, who was known for his encyclopaedic knowledge and erudition, compiled a bibliographic survey of the contents of the Library of Alexandria, called the Pinakes."

Search Engines/Moteurs de Recherche

What are they?

  • Electronically gathered Internet information into a database, which is then searched using keywords.
  • Search engines DO NOT search the Internet - only the engine's database.
  • Different databases give different results.

Use a SEARCH ENGINES when:

  • Looking for a specific site
  • Researching a narrow or particular topic
  • Looking for specific topics such as: Pierre Trudeau, Kyoto Protocol, or Nanjing Massacre
  • Retrieving a large number of documents on your topic
  • Searching for something specific like a type of document, file, location, person, image, date, etc.

How Search Engines Work!

Visual Search Engines - A new way to search

  • Grokker
  • Kartoo
  • Mooter
  • Ujiko : A visual search engine from KARTOO with automatic visual classification. The more you use it, the more functions it is able to offer. One of its unique features is the ability to navigate by topic.

Meta-moteurs/Meta Search Engines or Metacrawlers: Search multiple search engines from the same web site

  • Academic Reference & Research Index: A meta-search engine and virtual reference desk.
  • Yooci : Clean, easy to use, multilingual interface.
  • Clusty : Performs document clustering (based on titles, URLs, and short descriptions) so that users may browse the results by hierarchical categories. Very useful and effective approach.
  • Dog Pile : Clean, easy to use interface. Clustering of results is a helpful feature. Results presented by relevance with the option of viewing by search engine.
  • Findelio : A global meta-search engine, with a WHOIS box listed with each search result (great for checking the authenticity of a site).

Other Choices:

SPECIALIZED SUBJECT SEARCH ENGINES (See below & others on Subject Pages)

  • Scirus : An excellent science-specific search engine that covers web sites and a variety of journal sources.
